City of El Reno officials are waiting on word from the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on the status of four police officers and one fireman and their possible exposure to COVID-19.

The first responders were answering a reported medical call of a heart attack on Kerry Lane Tuesday night according to Assistant City Manager Matt Sandidge.

“It was called in as a heart attack,” said Sandidge,

El Reno Mayor and Acting City Manager Matt White said lifesaving measures were taken on the scene.

“They were responding to an incident which happened on Kerry Lane. When they arrived they did lifesaving CPR and that’s when the contact was made. The gentleman has had health problems and issues in the past but there was an issue with him having fever,” said White.

White said all five are on a mandatory quarantine period but they are not in a hospital setting.

“We are hoping for the best but we are preparing for the worst,” said White.

El Reno Fire Chief Jason Duff said that dispatcher notes show the victim was not breathing and was unconscious when first responders arrived. Duff said the victim was male but age was not confirmed.

“He was transported to St. Anthony’s El Reno and then picked up there by the state medical examiner’s office,” said Duff.

White confirmed the body was taken to the medical examiner’s office for testing.

“We are getting a plan together but we are waiting to hear back from the medical examiner’s office from the test on the deceased person to see if they had it or not.

“We have called the county health department and Sen. Lonnie Paxton got us in touch with the state health department. We were told there was a dormant state of about 48 hours and we are waiting that time period. We are waiting on the test and we will keep them in quarantine until we get the results back,” said White.

White said the medical examiner will determine if the man died from health issues other than the coronavirus. He expects to be notified sometime Friday on the test results.

White said if the tests come back positive for the virus, the first responders will remain in quarantine for at least the full 14 days which is being recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Right now it’s 48 hours for sure,” said White.
