ER chains Bernards in twinbill

El Reno High School’s softball team jumped back into the win column last week with a doubleheader sweep of Santa Fe South in District 5A-1 play at the Adams Park North complex.

The Indians improved to 5-4 on the season with victories of 17-1 and 18-1 over the St. Bernards. The sweep lifted El Reno to 4-1 in the league standings and into third place behind Lawton Eisenhower (5-0) and Carl Albert (2-0).

El Reno High School’s cross country team kicked off the 2020 season recently at the Weatherford Sand Plum Invitational.

In the girls division, running the mile course at Radar Park, Alexis Lively took 78th place with a time of eight minutes and 22 seconds. Kaylee Pawnee crossed the finish line in 84th place with a time of 10:39.

The boys division ran the two-mile course, with Jacob Long leading the charge for El Reno with a 41st-place effort in a time of 12:37. Wyatt Mehan posted a time of 14:27 to take 72nd, while Matthew Chaffee was two spots back with a time of 14:31.

Union City snaps skid with win streak; OHS downs Calumet

Snapping a four-game losing streak, Union City High School’s softball team has quietly put together a four-game winning streak to edge past .500 for the season.

The Tigers are 6-5 on the fall season after winning two games in the Geary Festival over Dover’s JV (8-5) and the host team by an 8-6 tally. Union City then defeated Carnegie (16-6) and Dover (13-1).

Makinzie DeLong led the Tigers offense over the four-game set with eight hits including two doubles and a pair of triples. Makenna DeLong hit five doubles to highlight her seven hits over the same span.

Extra base hits lift Tigers; Calumet drops two games

Fueled by six doubles and a triple, Union City High School’s baseball team defeated Verden last week 12-4 to improve to 5-2 on the fall season. The win came off the heels of a 9-1 decision over Dover.

The Tigers had only 13 hits for the two-game set, but eight of those were extra-base swings. Tyler Ross, Brayden Dennings, Lane Casey, Braydon Armstrong, Dalton Stout and Tyler Norton all recorded doubles over the two games, while Shane McNeil and Armstrong each added triples.

ER Football 2020 - 3+3 equals a stacked defense

Over his nine years as a head coach, there have been defensive schemes which have frustrated El Reno skipper Chuck Atchison when he has tried to call specific plays against them.

So when Atchison brought in Weston McGill as his new defensive coordinator for the 2020 season, he also switched the Indians basic defensive scheme to one of those nagging alignments from his past.

Enter the 3-3 stacked defense.

ER Football 2020 - El Reno offense a show to be seen

When Chuck Atchison got the job as El Reno High School’s football coach following the 2016 season, he said one of the keys to his offensive playbook was having a quarterback in the system for multiple years.

Wish granted.

Atchison will begin the 2020 season with one of Oklahoma’s most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks as Dorian Plumley returns for his third and final year at the helm of the Indians spread offense.

Late August in Oklahoma is the time of year that fans, coaches and players eagerly await as the start of a new football season creeps closer and closer.

However, there has been a COVID-19 cloud hanging over the state, not just in football but all sports since mid-March that has put a damper on preparations for the 2020 gridiron season.
