ER school doors to open Aug. 20, McVay decides

On the advice of local and state health officials, El Reno Public Schools Superintendent Craig McVay has opted to push forward with the district’s plan to hold in-person classes.

Using the Emergency Power Declaration passed by the El Reno Board of Education in March at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, McVay made the decision to hold in-person classes as well as push back the start of the school year. The school year will now begin Aug. 20.

Child pulled from Four Mile Creek

Body

A quick-acting adult was able to pull a child from Four Mile Creek after the girl slipped into the fast-moving water.

El Reno Assistant Police Chief Ken Dickerson said officers were called to the area of North Grand and Comanche after a 911 call reported the young girl had fallen into the creek. The child, whose age or name was not released, was reportedly swept downstream before an adult in the area was able to pull her out.

The adult was not identified.

COVID vs Football

Rafe Goucher put his health on the line for football as he and 73 other high school players statewide took part in the 2020 Oklahoma Football Coaches Association’s All-State Game.

It was by design.

“We had our first practice in Kingfisher two days earlier and they told us this was the first 11-man football played in Oklahoma since the state championships.

“They said this would go a long way to determining how football season would go this year for high schools. I didn’t mind being a guinea pig as long as I got to play football,” said Goucher.

Birth - Jade Elizabeth Green

GIRL - Paige and Micah Green of Binger are parents of a girl, Jade Elizabeth, born July 24 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. Jade weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 20.75 inches in length.

Maternal grandparents are Kim Warren and the late David Warren. Great-grandparents are Diane and Richard Birdsong and Sandra and Paul Warren.

Paternal grandparents are Becky and Don Green. Great-grandparents are William and Sue Green.

Pastor honored for 55th ordination anniversary

Former El Reno Pastor Earl Philipp was expecting to quietly reflect on the 55th anniversary of his ordination as a minister on July 5, but he was surprised by what happened.

A procession of 19 cars paraded past his home, located between Mustang and Yukon, honoring the man they fondly referred to as “Pastor Earl.”

Philipp was ordained July 4, 1965, in Olney, Texas.

Goucher joins list of El Reno All-Staters

Body

Growing up as a football ball boy, Rafe Goucher watched many talented El Reno High School athletes earn the highest honor handed out to prep players in Oklahoma – All-State laurels.

It drove him to become one of the program’s better two-way linemen in school history and eventually earn him the chance to don the coveted blue and yellow jacket reserved for those selected as All-Staters by the Oklahoma Coaches Association.

David Jackson Cook

Body

David Jackson Cook, age 84, of Oklahoma City, went home to his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, in Oklahoma City. He was born Sept. 30, 1935, in Wickes, Ark., to Charlie Gerry Cook and Viola Evangeline Hicks.   

When David was 17 he joined the U.S. Air Force and after his service worked hard to graduate from college with a B.S. in Accounting and Economics. On July 22, 1960, he married Olga Darlene Frachiseur in El Reno. They raised six children together -- three daughters, Darla, Diana and Debbie, and three sons, Darrel, Darren and Donny.

Funeral services for Kelly Curtis will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in the El Reno Cemetery.

A come-and-go viewing will be held Monday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
