Memorial service for Phillip James Mataya will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Hazel Dell Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Life gathering at the Mataya family home at 4 p.m.

Mr. Mataya died June 17, 2019, at his home in Cogar. He was born May 19, 1942, in Dawson, N.M.

As a young man, Phil worked alongside his father at their family-owned Texaco station in Gallup, N.M.

Phil owned and operated Pat and Phil’s Country Store and Café near Cogar for many years, and was involved in several other business ventures in his lifetime.

Phil is survived by his wife, Patricia; five children, Jerry Mataya of Groton, Conn., Kimbra McKinley of Knoxville, Tenn., Julie Mataya of Phoenix, Ariz., Shelly Butler of Nashville, Tenn., and Mark Mataya of Cogar; sister, Betty Chepin; brothers, William Mataya and Charles Mataya; and several grandchildren.
