Funeral services for Walter Ray “Scooter” Kirkland were held Tuesday in the Benson Memorial Chapel with Daylon Kirkland and Rev. Joe Jernigan officiating. Burial was in the El Reno Cemetery under the direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.
Mr. Kirkland died June 27, 2019, at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City. Scooter was born July 25, 1941, in Ponder, Texas, and was raised in Shamrock, Texas. He worked in the oil fields mostly as a driller and lived in El Reno for many years before moving to Cedar Lake. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Canadian Cycle Club, American Legion and board member of the Western Sportsman Club.
Scooter enjoyed many things including motorcycling, boating, camping, partying and helping people.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jeanna Burkes Kirkland; children and their spouses, Pee Wee and Vickie Kirkland, Angie Kirkland, Bobbie and Rachelle Kirkland, Tami Bryant, Travis and April Lagaly, Donnie and Mary Lagaly and Dee Garcia and fiancé, Steve Choate; siblings, Naomi Robertson, Shirley Gibson and Willabee Hooten; 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Lee and Tressie Mae Jones Kirkland; children, Glen Ray Kirkland and Pam Robinson; grandchildren, Alex and Nicholas Garcia; sister, Faye Bonner; and brothers, J.L., Bill, Donald, Pete, Tootsie and Butch Kirkland.
