Memorial Day in El Reno will be a time of tribute and education as two ceremonies are planned in honor of America’s veterans.
The traditional Memorial Day service at the El Reno Cemetery will begin at 11 a.m. Monday. Canadian County Sheriff Chris West will be the guest speaker.
Also at 11 on Monday, the Fort Reno Visitors Center will host two World War II veterans, one an author of children’s books.
Mayor Matt White said veterans organizations and volunteers will decorate the El Reno Cemetery Saturday morning, planting American flags at the gravesite of each military vetaran.
The Monday service will feature tributes by veterans organizations such as the American Legion, VFW and Disabled American Vets.
Dr. Hall Duncan will be at the Fort Reno Visitors Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Besides signing his books, he will share stories of World War II. For a $25 donation, visitors will receive a copy of his book and ice cream. All proceeds will benefit Historic Fort Reno restoration, education and operations.
Duncan has authored and illustrated a dozen children’s books, said Fort Reno Museum Director Wendy Ogden.
Also scheduled to be on hand is World War II veteran Antone Lackey. The veteran was raised in Calumet.
