An arrest in what police said was an armed robbery near Legion Park on Monday has apparently led to the person responsible for shooting at a police car on Thursday night.
Major Kirk Dickerson said officers arrested Destin Jamon Richey, 19, in connection with both incidents.
Two juveniles were reportedly with Richey. Both are in the custody of juvenile authorities.
The alleged armed robbery took place Monday afternoon in the 400 block of West Watts.
Police were told a man had pulled a gun on a person and taken a cell phone from him.
Another person was reportedly choked during the incident. One of the victims was able to identify Richey as the person who pulled the gun.
Police reportedly located three suspects near Legion Park. The two juveniles stopped when police ordered them to. The third, Richey, reportedly continued walking and was seen throwing objects into the south end of Legion Park pond. He was eventually taken into custody in the 800 block of South Duane Street.
A dive team from the El Reno Fire Department was called in to search the pond.
The divers recovered a .38 caliber handgun as well as a bag of marijuana.
The gun is believed to be the same caliber used to shoot at the police cruiser.
Police said after interviewing Richey, he confessed to shooting at the police car.
That incident happened at approximately 10:17 p.m. on Thursday, July 4.
An officer was conducting a traffic stop near Elm and Frances. During the stop, the officer heard what sounded like a gunshot coming from the nearby Elms Apartments.
Police said the officer heard “a metallic bang” hit the rear door on the driver’s side.
A K9 was in the backseat kennel. Neither the dog or the officer were injured.
Police said upon inspection, the officer discovered a lone shell.
The bullet had passed through the outer panel of the door but failed to pass through the inner panel.
