Military veterans will be celebrated when the Seventh Annual Canadian County Veterans Day Parade unfolds Sunday, Nov. 11.
The event is held annually in downtown El Reno and attracts veterans, family members, politicians and patriots from throughout Canadian County. The event is organized by the El Reno Chamber of Commerce.
The theme of this year’s event is America - Land of the Free, Because of the Brave.
Veterans will ride the Heritage Express Trolley through downtown before the program begins at the Centre Theatre.
Guest speaker will be Honor Flight executive director and former state lawmaker Gary Banz.
Chamber chair Kathy Boeckman will serve as master of ceremonies. The invocation will be given by State Rep. Rhonda Baker, while the Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Sen. Lonnie Paxton.
A veteran from each county community will be recognized - Howard Burkhead of Calumet; John Henderson of El Reno; Barry Carrington of Mustang; Robert E. Davis of Okarche; Judge Ken Dickerson of Piedmont; James Smith of Union City; and Tom Thomas of Yukon.
The parade begins at 3 p.m. with the program scheduled for 4 p.m.
The National Anthem will be performed by Michelle Lloyd, El Reno High School music instructor, while the benediction will be given by Sheriff Chris West.
Gary Baumwart will make a special presentation to Banz, and Randy Hurst will provide a salute to services honoring the veterans of the year.
A living tribute of the Iwo Jima Memorial will be performed and Stan Engle will end the ceremony with the playing of Taps.
