CAR SEAT CHECK SCHEDULED FOR NOV. 21
TRACI CHAPMAN
Edition:Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates automobile accidents are the leading cause of death among children and youth from birth through age 14.
Sheriff Randall Edwards said Friday he wants to change that statistic in Canadian County, and his office is hosting a car seat safety check Nov. 21 to accomplish it.
“This is such an important issue, and so many people either install car seats improperly or don''t put seat belts on older children,” Edwards said. “If we can save even one child''s life, it will be worth it.”
Co-hosted by Safe Kids Oklahoma, the event will feature certified child passenger safety technicians providing hands-on instruction to parents. Eligible families may also apply for child safety seats, Edwards said. Individuals wishing to take advantage of that option should bring proof of government assistance payments, and there is a $10 charge for the seat, he said.
The check will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at the sheriff''s office, located at 208 W. Rogers. For more information, call 262-3434.
