BY GLEN MILLER

UNION CITY – Turnovers and an unforgiving rim led to a disastrous first half for Union City High School's girls basketball team in a 59-26 loss to Hydro-Eakly.
The 33-point setback dropped Union City to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in the Grady County Conference standings.
The Tigers scored only six points in the opening two periods, two from Laura Canady and a basket and two free throws by Wendy Holshouser.
Union City trailed 28-6 at the half.
The Tigers found some offensive spark in the third period on a 3-pointer by Victoria Michalicka and three points from Canady to highlight an 11-point output. However, the Tigers still trailed 51-17 going into the final period.
Union City outscored the visitors 9-8 in the fourth, getting four points from Macie Gillock and two each from Michalicka and Megan Allred.
Holshouser and Gillock led the Tigers in scoring with six points each and combined for six rebounds. Michalicka had five points and five boards, while Canady had five points and four caroms.
Kyra Murphy and Jessica Frady added a free throw each and collected five rebounds combined. Diana Landry had three boards in the loss, followed by Layci Barger with two and one from Bonnie Sweeney.
