TIGERS FALL TO OLD NEMICE LOMEGA
BY GLEN MILLER
Edition:Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Union City High School's baseball team ran into a familiar foe over the weekend in the consolation finals of the Hammon Wooden Bat Tournament.
In the fourth meeting this season, Lomega scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge the Tigers 5-3. The loss dropped Union City to 12-11.
“They have done a good job against us this year,” Union City's Ludy Griggs said of Lomega. “It was our fourth meeting and they came out on top again. We put runs up in the first and then they just found a way to keep us off third base.”
Union City scored three runs in the first inning, but was quiet the remaining six. Lomega chipped away with a run in the second, followed by two in the third and sixth frames.
Anthony Fanzo tossed three innings, allowing three runs off five hits and a trio of walks. He fanned three batters. Coltan Armstrong scattered two runs, four hits, two walks and three strikeouts over two innings.
Jacob Miller led Union City at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs driven in. Collin Canady and Brayden Jones singled, while Armstrong had a two-run single.
Union City 10, Arapaho 9
Brandon Roberts threw six innings, allowing nine runs off nine hits, en route to the win. The right-hander walked seven but struck out five. Fanzo picked up the save in the seventh.
“I gave the ball to the senior and told him to get us to the next day,” Griggs said. “Brandon got us through six tough innings and another senior picked up the save.”
Armstrong was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Fanzo added an RBI-double and Miller singled in a run.
Navajo 10, Union City 0
Navajo, ranked 12th in the state, handcuffed the Tigers to a pair of hits in the opening round. Donald Duffey singled in the loss, while Fanzo had a double and one walk.
Logan Gillock shouldered the loss, allowing 10 runs (six earned) off 12 hits.
