CALUMET BASEBALL GETS ROCKY START IN ARAPAHO
BY GARRETT EATON
Edition:Saturday, August 29, 2009

The Calumet baseball team started a new era this season, after losing three all-star seniors in Chase Evans, Gavin Beavers and Ryan Hunter - each were chosen to play in the Western Oklahoma Mid-America Classic.
The new-look Chieftains opened the 2009 fall season in the recent Arapaho Tournament, getting off to a slow start with a 9-0 loss to the host school.
Marcos Baros would take the loss for the Chieftains on the hill, striking out two while walking four.
“The first-game jitters led to a lot of errors. We had a lot of kids playing positions that they weren't used to,” said coach Matt Haley.
In the second game, the Chieftains played the Davidson Sandies, a team right on the Oklahoma-Texas border. The Chieftains bats came alive against the Sandies, winning the game by a score of 9-1.
Grant Hedrick got the win, pitching the entire five innings, logging five strikeouts and two walks. Hedrick went 2-for-3 with a triple, helping out his own cause.
Tyler Spoon went 1-for-3, while Darrion Dobbins went 1-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Dylan Gilbert and Kirby Woolard each went 2-for-3, hitting a double.
“Much better game against Davidson, we cut down on errors and really rebounded well from our opening loss,” said Haley.
In Calumet's finale of the tournament, the Chieftains were defeated 12-0 in three innings by Erick-Sweetwater.
Spoon, Hedrick and Dylan Gilbert each went 1-for-2 from the plate, while Woolard went 1-for-1 with a two-bagger.
