To the Editor:
$17 million?
If the current jail population was increased to 170 prisoners, that would calculate to $100,000 per inmate. And remember, hardly any are in jail for singing too loudly in church.
Before condemning Canadian County citizens to paying for a plaza for prisoners, I would suggest the sheriff and Canadian County commissioners examine places where our heroes live, places like Fort Sill, Fort Chaffee, Paris Island, Camp LeJeune, or, for a real commitment, visit the USS Batfish at Muskogee.
I'm sure there are many local soldiers who can intimately describe the less than excellent facilities in the Arabian Gulf area. I can personally recall months with nothing but a bunk, a sea bag and a canvas tent.
There are construction companies here, Ward Construction for one, as well as in Weatherford that could erect a solid concrete wall barracks in a matter of weeks, at a price we could afford.
Marvin L. Denny, D.V.M.
